Meet Dr. Angela Peña, PhD, NCC, LPC-S

I am a counselor, educator and sex therapist. I am proud to say that my work is both my purpose and passion. I have always been intrigued by learning and continue to be an avid learner in a myriad of topics in pursuit of greater understanding and connection to human experiences. I believe that counseling is a synergy of mind, body and spirit. Our energy is awakened when we are connected to all of these parts.

Sex therapy allows for a venue to harness and connect all parts of self. It is a place to learn, discuss, share and experience validation.

My Background

My background consists of over a decade of clinical experience that I have used to serve individuals within the non profit and private practice sectors. Teaching is also a passion of mine, and I have been an active participant in counselor education since my days in graduate school. I have taught in both full and adjunct capacities, and currently serve as an adjunct instructor at Southern Methodist University. I am also the owner of Milestone Family Counseling which serves the general needs of the community in Frisco, Texas.

Who I Work With

I am proud to be a LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist, dedicated to providing a celebratory and safe harbor for individuals and couples of all identities. While sex therapy is a core component of my practice, my clinical expertise extends deep into the complexities of human experience. I specialize in guiding clients through the aftermath of trauma, PTSD, and domestic violence, helping to restore a sense of safety within the body.

My work also encompasses specialized care for neurodivergent minds and those navigating complex mental health challenges, including anxiety, mood disorders, and personality disorders. I am equipped to hold space for high-acuity needs, such as self-harming behaviors and suicidal ideation, ensuring you are never alone in the darkness. Additionally, I am passionate about relationship restoration following infidelity and addressing the unique societal and emotional landscapes found within women’s issues.

My Therapeutic Approach

I am a humanistic therapist with a Gestalt therapeutic lens, which means I focus on the whole person and their experiences in the present moment. My approach is integrative, drawing from various treatment modalities to best suit the needs of my clients. For couples work, I incorporate the Gottman Method which emphasizes building a strong foundation of friendship and managing conflict constructively, and Imago Relationship Therapy, which focuses on transforming conflict into healing and growth. I approach all individuals and couples with genuine care, concern, and curiosity, ensuring that each session is tailored to foster a deeper understanding and connection.

Outside the Office

In the same way that I conduct therapy, I embrace life. I have always been known to be an outside the box person and encourage others to find pleasure in all that they do. Authenticity is paramount for all things which is a synergy of mind, body and spirit that leads to the experience of pleasure. I embrace the value of challenging my mind through a great debate, reading, writing, learning and teaching. I also value the importance of taking care of my physical health through exercise and nutrition. I love practicing yoga, hiking, spinning classes, and weight lifting. I am a self proclaimed foodie who loves to cook and bake, but I also prefer finding good cuisine where they will do the dishes for me! I also connect to my spirit through many avenues of pleasure such as spending time with my husband, children, my dog, family, friends, gardening, singing, dancing, listening to music, sitting on a beach or on the edge of a mountain.

FAQs

Will this be like an interview where you ask me questions?

No but I may ask questions that encourage you to go deeper into a topic or to explain further. I don’t ask questions for my own knowledge- only if they are therapeutic in nature.

Can I ask questions about you?

Yes, of course! I want you to feel comfortable with me and see me as a person.

Will you give me advice about what to do?

No, therapy is a space for you to process the struggle of determining what to do. I will always let you lead in therapy and be a passenger versus a driver. My role is to help you see what you may miss in the rearview mirror or on the passenger side window.

Do you accept insurance?

Many clients ask if we accept insurance for our services. At Ignite Therapy, we operate as a private-pay practice and do not accept insurance directly. We have made this decision to protect your absolute privacy and control over your care. Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis to authorize payment, which then becomes part of your permanent medical record.

Our rates are $250 for the initial intake, $225 for couples sessions, and $200 for individual sessions. By remaining private pay, we ensure that your therapy remains confidential and determined solely by your needs, not by an insurance provider’s criteria.

Is therapy with you always serious and heavy?

Not at all. I believe that healing often happens through connection and joy, not just tears. I am a very "real" person—I love to laugh and joke. While we will certainly do the deep work, you can expect a space that is down-to-earth and holds room for your humor and lightness, too.
